AMS releases amsrefs 2.0

July 29, 2004

PROVIDENCE, RI: The AMS has released amsrefs 2.0, a LaTeX extension package for use in preparing bibliography and reference lists. Amsrefs allows an author to send a paper with embedded references to a publisher without any loss of internal structural information about the entries, which provides for the preservation of structured markup of the bibliography throughout the entire lifetime of the document from rough draft to final archival version. This is of key importance as the references then retain a semantically rich markup that makes them easier to reuse in other publishing environments, such as on the Web, in other book or journal formats, or with citation services.

The package offers many of the convenient features that LaTeX and BibTeX users have come to expect without imposing the need to work in two separate programs. Some of the features of amsrefs 2.0 include:

* comprehensive documentation, with detailed examples, for users
* support for multilingual typesetting
* improved support for certain complicated references such as conference papers, translations, multi-part papers and reprints that are typically handled in an ad-hoc way by existing bibliography systems
* a new BibTeX-style option for authors preparing papers for non-AMS journals
* support for multiple citation schemes: numeric labels, alphabetic labels, and author-year citations
* the option to abbreviate author names, journal and publisher titles, and months

Users of the previous amsrefs version can find a detailed description of the enhancements.
