News ReleaseResearch Mathematics Lecture for Talented High School Students Contact At AMS: Tim Goggins (401) 455-4110, FAX (401) 331-3842, tjg@ams.org
March 25, 1999 Boston area high school students interested in mathematics will have a rare opportunity to attend a special lecture on mathematics on April 12, 1999 at the Cahners Theatre of the Boston Museum of Science Boston. The lecture sponsored by Museum and the American Mathematical Society will be given by National Medal of Science winner, I. M. Singer, Institute Professor at MIT and McArthur award winner, Ingrid Daubechies, Professor of Mathematics from Princeton University. Singer will discuss how a remarkable and easily understood result in mathematics (The Gauss-Bonnet Theorem) exemplifies the unity of mathematics, e.g. combinatorics, topology, geometry and analysis. Daubechies will discuss wavelets, a common interest of mathematicians, physicists and engineers. The program begins at 9:00 and ends at noon. For information, contact Heather MacDonald, 800-321-4267 or 401-455-4147 or hjm@ams.org. For free reservations, call 617-723-2511. The lecture is part of The Arnold Ross Lecture Series occurring at a different site within the U.S. annually. |
