Shlomo Hoory, Nathan Linial, and Avi Wigderson Receive 2008 AMS Conant Prize

January 7, 2008

Providence, RI:

Shlomo Hoory of IBM Haifa Research Labs, Nathan Linial of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and Avi Wigderson of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton have received the 2008 AMS Levi L. Conant Prize. Presented annually by the American Mathematical Society, the Conant Prize recognizes an outstanding expository paper published in either the Notices of the AMS or the Bulletin of the AMS in the preceding five years. The prize was awarded today at the Joint Mathematics Meetings in San Diego, California.

The three authors are honored for their article "Expander graphs and their applications", Bulletin of the AMS, volume 43, number 4 (2006) 439-561. "Since their introduction 30 years ago, the study of expander graphs has blossomed into a substantial area of research with many branches," the prize citation states. Providing a thorough overview of developments in the area, the citation concludes, this very readable article is readily accessible for self-study by graduate students and could even be appropriate for an advanced undergraduate seminar.

The prize-winning article is freely available on the Bulletin website at http://www.ams.org/bulletin.
