Northwestern University to Host Mathematics Meeting

Providence, RI—Northwestern University will host the Fall Central Section Meeting of the American Mathematical Society October 23-24. Over 500 mathematicians from 37 states and 18 countries will gather at the university for the meeting.

Mathematics Department participation in the meeting

  • Yuri Manin will be giving an invited address titled Fractional dimensions in geometry and algebra, on Saturday October 24, from 11:40 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Manin's address is one of four to take place during the meeting.
  • Six faculty members from the department will be giving talks at special sessions during the meeting. Those speakers are: Keith Burns, George Gasper, Mark Mahowald, Andrew Mauer-Oats, Ionel Popescu, and Andras Vasy.
  • Six mathematics department faculty members are organizing sessions at the meeting. Session organizers are: Gui-Qiang Chen (organizer of two sessions), Eric Friedlander, George Gasper, Paul Goerss, Kari Vilonen, and Jared Wunsch.

Participation in the meeting by university personnel from outside the Mathematics Department :

  • Engineering Sciences and Applied Mathematics: Moshe Matalon and Mary Silber are both giving talks at the meeting.
  • Mechanical Engineering: Kevin Lynch is giving a talk at the meeting.
