PROVIDENCE, RIóHarry Kesten, a mathematician at Cornell University, has won the 2001 Leroy P. Steele Prize for Lifetime Achievement. Presented by the American Mathematical Society, the Steele Prize is one of the highest distinctions in mathematics.  The prize will be awarded on January 11, 2001, at the Joint Mathematics Meetings in New Orleans.

The prize citation states that Professor Kesten is being honored for "his many and deep contributions to probability theory and its applications."  In addition to doing distinguished research on theoretical problems, Professor Kesten has also contributed to the understanding of many practical questions dealing with matters such as population growth and river networks.  In addition, his work has been influential in statistical mechanics.

Founded in 1888 to further mathematical research and scholarship, the 30,000-member American Mathematical Society fulfills its mission through programs and services that promote mathematical research and its uses, strengthen mathematical education, and foster awareness and appreciation of mathematics and its connections to other disciplines and to everyday life.
