PROVIDENCE, RIóHarry Kesten, a mathematician at Cornell University,
has won the 2001 Leroy P. Steele Prize for Lifetime Achievement. Presented
by the American Mathematical Society, the Steele Prize is one of the highest
distinctions in mathematics. The prize will be awarded on January
11, 2001, at the Joint Mathematics Meetings in New Orleans.
The prize citation states that Professor Kesten is being honored for
"his many and deep contributions to probability theory and its
applications."
In addition to doing distinguished research on theoretical problems, Professor
Kesten has also contributed to the understanding of many practical questions
dealing with matters such as population growth and river networks.
In addition, his work has been influential in statistical mechanics.
Founded in 1888 to further mathematical research and scholarship, the
30,000-member American Mathematical Society fulfills its mission through
programs and services that promote mathematical research and its uses,
strengthen mathematical education, and foster awareness and appreciation
of mathematics and its connections to other disciplines and to everyday
life.
