University of Southern California to Host Mathematics MeetingMarch 10, 2004 PROVIDENCE, RI—The University of Southern California will host the Spring Western Section Meeting of the American Mathematical Society April 3-4. Over 200 mathematicians from 31 states and 9 countries will gather at the University to share results of their research. USC Department of Mathematics participation in the meeting : There will be 12 talks by members of the University’s Department of Mathematics at the meeting. Mathematics faculty speakers are: Peter H. Baxendale, Thomas Geisser, Cymra Haskell, Igor Kukavica, Charles P. Lanski, Florence J. Lin, Remigijus Mikulevicius, Paul K. Newton, Robert C. Penner, Wayne Raskind, Dragomir Saric, and Mohammed B. Ziane. Three USC mathematics faculty members are co-authors of talks. Co-authors are: Francis Bonahon, Cymra Haskell, and Ko Honda. In addition to the talks, there are 12 mathematics department faculty members who are organizing sessions on 7 areas of research. USC mathematics faculty session organizers are: Francis Bonahon, Jaksa Cvitanic, Dragomir Dragnev, Thomas Geisser, Nicolai Haydn, Ko Honda, Sang Seon Kim, Igor Kukavica, Wayne Raskind, Dragomir Saric, Janfeng Zhang, and Mohammed Ziane. Francois Gueritaud and Xiaobo Liu, graduate students in the Department of Mathematics, are also giving talks at the meeting. USC participation by non-mathematics personnel : Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering: Bharat Khushalani is giving two talks at the meeting, and J. A. Domaradzki is giving a talk co-authored with X. Yang. The meeting also includes four invited addresses, two on each day. Topics for the invited addresses cover a wide spectrum of mathematics, including both pure and applied mathematics. All of the presentations at the meeting will be given at the Mark Taper Hall of the Humanities.
