John Meier Receives 2003-2004 AMS Centennial Fellowship

April 29, 2003

Providence, RI:

John E. Meier of Lafayette College has been chosen to receive an AMS Centennial Fellowship for 2003-2004.

Each year the AMS Centennial Fellowships are awarded to between two and four outstanding mathematicians to help further their careers in research. The amount of the fellowship is US$57,000, with an additional expense allowance of US$1,600.

Meier's research has touched on many areas in geometric group theory, with a heavy emphasis on the use of geometry in studying group cohomology. The Centennial Fellowship will allow him to spend the year visiting Columbia University and the University of California, Santa Barbara.
