PROVIDENCE, RI---Joshua Greene, who received a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Harvey Mudd College in 2002, is receiving the 2003 AMS-MAA-SIAM Morgan Prize. Each year the prize is presented by American Mathematical Society, the Mathematical Association of America, and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. The Morgan Prize recognizes outstanding research in mathematics by an undergraduate student. The prize will be awarded today at the Joint Mathematics Meetings in Baltimore, Maryland.

Greene is being honored for his paper `"A new short proof of Kneser's conjecture," which is to appear in the American Mathematical Monthly, and his senior thesis "Kneser's conjecture and its generalizations". The depth and quality of Greene's research is impressive, as is his command of a large body of topology, geometry, and combinatorics required for his work. The quality of his research papers, the enthusiastic letters from his mentors, and the response to his work from many researchers all confirm the outstanding nature of his research.
