For more information, contact:
January 16, 2003 PROVIDENCE, RI---Joshua Greene, who received a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Harvey Mudd College in 2002, is receiving the 2003 AMS-MAA-SIAM Morgan Prize. Each year the prize is presented by American Mathematical Society, the Mathematical Association of America, and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. The Morgan Prize recognizes outstanding research in mathematics by an undergraduate student. The prize will be awarded today at the Joint Mathematics Meetings in Baltimore, Maryland. Greene is being honored for his paper `"A new short proof of Kneser's conjecture," which is to appear in the American Mathematical Monthly, and his senior thesis "Kneser's conjecture and its generalizations". The depth and quality of Greene's research is impressive, as is his command of a large body of topology, geometry, and combinatorics required for his work. The quality of his research papers, the enthusiastic letters from his mentors, and the response to his work from many researchers all confirm the outstanding nature of his research. Further information about AMS prizes may be found at http://www.ams.org/prizes-awards. Founded in 1888 to further mathematical research and scholarship, the 30,000-member American Mathematical Society fulfills its mission through programs and services that promote mathematical research and its uses, strengthen mathematical education, and foster awareness and appreciation of mathematics and its connections to other disciplines and to everyday life. |
