University of Pittsburgh to Host Mathematics MeetingOctober 18, 2004 Providence, RI--The University of Pittsburgh will host the 2004 Fall Eastern Section Meeting of the American Mathematical Society November 6-7. Over 400 mathematicians from 39 states and 16 countries will gather at the university for the meeting. Department of Mathematics participation in the meeting : Seven talks by faculty in the University’s Department of Mathematics. Those speakers are: Piotr Hajlasz, David Swigon (who is giving two talks), William C. Troy, Anna Vainchtein, Earl Glen Whitehead, Jr., and Ivan Yotov. Eight mathematics faculty are co-authors of talks. Co-authors are: John Chadam, Xinfu Chen, Bard Ermentrout, Christopher J. Lennard, Juan J. Manfredi, Jonathan Rubin, David Saunders, and Earl Glen Whitehead, Jr. Fourteen mathematics department faculty members are organizing sessions on nine areas of research. Those session organizers are: John Chadam, Xinfu Chen, Mark E. T. Dickinson, Bard Ermentrout, William J. Layton, Christopher J. Lennard, Juan J. Manfredi, Thomas A. Metzger, Jonathan Rubin, David Saunders, William C. Troy, Anna Vainchtein, Dehua Wang, and Earl Glen Whitehead, Jr. Five mathematics graduate students are speaking at the meeting. Those speakers are: Lan Cheng, Judy Day, Jonathan Drover, Carolina Manica, and Abebaw Tadesse. Talks in the meeting by university personnel from outside the Department of Mathematics : Mechanical Engineering: Giovanni P. Galdi and Peyman Givi are giving talks at the meeting.
