PROVIDENCE, RI---Abigail Thompson of the University of California, Davis, is receiving the 2003 AMS Satter Prize. Presented every two years by the American Mathematical Society, the Satter Prize recognizes an outstanding contribution to mathematics research by a woman in the previous five years. The prize will be awarded today at the Joint Mathematics Meetings in Baltimore, Maryland.

Professor Thompson is being honored for her outstanding work in 3-dimensional topology, particularly for her papers "Thin position and the recognition problem for S3 " (Mathematical Research Letters 1 (1994)), and "Thin position and bridge number for knots in the 3-sphere" (Topology 36 (1997)).
