PROVIDENCE, RIóKaren E. Smith, a mathematician at the University of
Michigan, Ann Arbor, has won the 2001 Ruth Lyttle Satter Prize. Presented
by the American Mathematical Society, the Satter Prize honors outstanding
contributions to mathematics research by a woman in the previous five
years.
The prize will be awarded on January 11, 2001, at the Joint Mathematics
Meetings in New Orleans.
The prize citation says that the prize is being awarded to Professor
Smith for "her outstanding work in commutative algebra, which has established
her as a world leader" in a certain subarea within this area of
mathematics.
"It is also awarded for her more recent work, which builds new bridges
between commutative algebra and algebraic geometry." The citation
makes specific mention of three of her most influential research papers,
which appeared in top mathematics journals.
Founded in 1888 to further mathematical research and scholarship, the
30,000-member American Mathematical Society fulfills its mission through
programs and services that promote mathematical research and its uses,
strengthen mathematical education, and foster awareness and appreciation
of mathematics and its connections to other disciplines and to everyday
life.
