PROVIDENCE, RI---Yitzhak Katznelson of Stanford University will
receive the 2002 Leroy P. Steele Prize for Mathematical Exposition.
Presented annually by the American Mathematical Society, the Steele
Prize is one of the highest distinctions in mathematics. The prize
will be awarded today at the Joint Mathematics Meetings in San
Diego, California.
Professor Katznelson is being honored for his classic text,
An Introduction to Harmonic Analysis (second corrected
edition, Dover Publications, Inc., New York, 1976). This book has
made the subject of harmonic analysis accessible to generations of
mathematicians at all levels. "The clear and concise exposition and
the presence of a large number of exercises make it an ideal source
for anyone who wants to learn the basics of the subject," the prize
citation states.
