January 8, 2007

Providence, RI:

Craig Tracy of the University of California, Davis, and Harold Widom of the University of California at Santa Cruz have received the 2007 AMS-SIAM Norbert Wiener Prize in Applied Mathematics. Presented every three years by the American Mathematical Society and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, the Wiener Prize is awarded for outstanding contributions to applied mathematics in the highest and broadest sense. The prize was awarded on Saturday, January 6, 2007, at the Joint Mathematics Meetings in New Orleans, Louisiana.

"Craig Tracy and Harold Widom have done deep and original work on Random Matrix Theory, a subject which has remarkable applications across the scientific spectrum, from the scattering of neutrons off large nuclei to the behavior of the zeros of the Riemann zeta-function," the prize citation says. This widely acclaimed work has had a profound influence in various areas of mathematics.
