Williams College to Host Mathematics Meeting
Contact: Michael Breen or Annette Emerson September 14, 2001 Providence, RI: Williams College will host the Fall Eastern Section Meeting of the American Mathematical Society, October 13 and 14. Over 200 mathematicians from 35 states and 16 countries will gather at the College to present results of their research. Among the presentations will be two from members of the College's Department of Mathematics and Statistics. In addition, five members of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics faculty have organized sessions on five different areas of research. Roger Penrose of Oxford University will be giving a talk entitled "Elementary Introduction to Spinors" at 3:10 Saturday afternoon in Wege Auditorium. The talk is part of the Special Session on the Geometry and Topology of the Universe, organized by Colin Adams of Williams, Glenn Starkmann of Case Western Reserve, and Jeffrey Weeks of Canton, NY. In addition, Sir Penrose will be giving a general talk entitled "Science and the Mind" at 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 12, in Chapin Hall. This event is sponsored by Williams College. See the program.
