PROVIDENCE, RIóSijue Wu, a mathematician at the University of Maryland,
College Park, has won the 2001 Ruth Lyttle Satter Prize. Presented by the
American Mathematical Society, the Satter Prize honors outstanding
contributions
to mathematics research by a woman in the previous five years. The
prize will be awarded on January 11, 2001, at the Joint Mathematics Meetings
in New Orleans.
Professor Wu is being honored for "her work on a longstanding problem
in the water wave equation." The citation specifically mentions two
of her most influential papers, which have appeared in top mathematics
journals.
Founded in 1888 to further mathematical research and scholarship, the
30,000-member American Mathematical Society fulfills its mission through
programs and services that promote mathematical research and its uses,
strengthen mathematical education, and foster awareness and appreciation
of mathematics and its connections to other disciplines and to everyday
life.
