What is a cookie?

A cookie is a small amount of data that is placed on your hard disk through your browser when you are visiting a web site. This cookie file is later used to identify you.

You can configure your browser to accept all cookies, reject all cookies, or notify you when a cookie is set. Consult your browser help for instructions. Certain functions of the AMS web site, including the AMS Web Account Service, depend upon cookies being accepted by your browser.

How are cookies used to identify users?

Upon entering a section that requires user identification, you will be prompted for a username and password. A cookie is set once you have submitted this information. Setting a cookie will allow the AMS web site to identify you as you browse through different areas of the site that require user identification. AMS cookies for this service are set to expire after two hours.

How do I enable cookies in my browser?

Netscape 4.x and higher:
From the Edit menu, click on Preferences.
From the Preferences menu, select Advanced.
In the Cookies section, click the radio button next to Accept (Enable) all cookies.

Internet Explorer 5.x:
From the Tools menu, click on Internet Options.
Select the Security tab.
Make sure Internet is selected under Web Content Zone.
Click the Custom Level button.
Scroll down to the Cookie section and click the radio button next to Enable.

Internet Explorer 6.0:
From the Tools menu, click on Internet Options.
Select the Privacy tab.
Click the Advanced button.
Check the box next to Override automatic cookie handling.
Check the box next to Always allow session cookies.

AMS cookies are set to expire after two hours. This is done for security purposes. If there has been a prolonged period of inactivity on your account, the AMS cookie that was set has most likely expired and you will be prompted with the sign in screen.
