Electronic Products

Q: How can I subscribe to Mathematical Reviews products if my affiliation does not have a license?

A : If your institution does not currently subscribe to an MR product, you should encourage your librarian or math department chair to look into subscribing to MathSciNet (the online MR database) through our consortia arrangements. There are now over 100 consortia worldwide with more than 1,000 academic institutions that enjoy access to MathSciNet. These institutions include public and private colleges and universities, community colleges, satellite campuses, corporations, and more.

More information regarding the MSN consortia program and its pricing philosophy and formulas can be found at: MathSciNet Consortia Pricing .

The AMS is pleased to consider any consortia requests and will provide subscription price quotes for any group, even those composed of all new subscribers. We make every effort to help small institutions to form new consortia or join an existing one.

For more information about consortia, price quotes, or to sign up for a free trial, please contact:

Shirley Hill, Sales Administration, Email: sxh@ams.org
Telephone: 401-455-4142 (worldwide), 800-321-4267, ext. 4142 ( U.S. and Canada ), Fax: 401-331-3842

Q: I am trying to access an electronic journal but it requires a user name and password. What can I do?

A: The AMS offers certain electronic journals free of charge and others that require prepayment. Everyone is allowed to search our electronic journals up through the abstracts. If you want to see the full article for a journal that requires prepayment, the system will ask for a user name and password. The AMS provides a user name and password if you have paid for access to that publication. If you are using your institution's computer system, you may wish to check with your library to see if they have a paid subscription to the publication you are trying to access.

Editor Credits

Q : I tried to use my Editor Credits but could not.   Why?

A : Commencing with the awards for 2004, Editor Credits were replaced by AMS Points.   See the AMS Points section of this FAQ for details on the AMS Points program.

AMS Points

Q : What is an AMS Point?

A : An AMS Point entitles the holder to a $1 discount on the purchase of AMS publications and gift items (including related shipping costs) and, with the limit of $16, to membership dues. AMS Points have no cash value. AMS Points will expire on December 31, two years after the year in which they were issued. For example, a point awarded on April 23, 2003, will expire on December 31, 2005 .

Q: How are my AMS points associated with me?

A: Your AMS Points are associated with you via your MR Reviewer Number or AMS Points ID Number. If you have recently been or become a Reviewer for MR at a later date, you will be assigned an MR Reviewer Number. If you have an MR Reviewer Number, this is used to identify all your points, no matter the source. If you have never been an MR Reviewer, you have been assigned a unique AMS Points ID Number, and this is used to identify your points. If you have an AMS Points ID Number assigned and later become a Reviewer for MR, you will be assigned an MR Reviewer Number and this will replace the AMS Points ID Number as the way to identify your points.

Q: What can I use my AMS Points for?

A : AMS Points can be used as a discount on individual membership in the AMS (maximum of 16 points may be used for membership each year) and/or the purchase of AMS publications and gift items (including related shipping costs). One point = $1 discount.

AMS Points cannot be used to make a contribution to the AMS or applied as a discount to fees associated with AMS meetings.

Q: Can I apply the AMS points to an order that I previously sent to the AMS?

A. Points can only be applied to new orders. We are unable to issue credit for something that was previously billed. Also, we cannot issue a credit or send a refund for the partial use of a point.

Q: Can I send my AMS Points to other distributors of AMS products?

A: AMS Points are valid only for AMS publications, gift items and membership (up to 16 points) ordered directly through the AMS.

Q: Am I entitled to pay member price for AMS products when using AMS Points?

A: You are entitled to pay member price only if you are a member of the AMS at the time you place your order.

Q: How do I use my points when ordering from the AMS?

A : Whether you are ordering using a printed order form, our online Bookstore, or the phone, you will need to provide your MR Reviewer Number or AMS Points ID and the number of points you wish to use. Your MR Reviewer Number or AMS Points ID Number is on each Points Statement you receive from the AMS.

Q: How do I use my points when ordering from the AMS Bookstore?

A : When ordering online, the Bookstore requires that you login to your AMS web account to use AMS Points as a discount on applicable purchases. The Bookstore ‘checkout' payment screen will prompt you to login if you wish to apply AMS points as a discount toward payment of your order.

If you do not already have an AMS web account, you can easily create one from the login screen by supplying your MR Reviewer Number or AMS Points ID (whichever is applicable to you), in addition to some basic information. Once logged in, AMS Points information is displayed on the bookstore ‘checkout' payment screen with instructions as to how to use them.

Q : Where do I find my AMS Points ID Number or MR Reviewer Number?

A : Your AMS Points ID Number or MR Reviewer Number (whichever is applicable to you) is on each AMS Points Statement that you receive.   Once established, you can also view your AMS Points or MR Reviewer Number information by logging into ‘your web account' on the AMS website: AMS Sign In .

Q : How do I find out my AMS Points balance?

A :   You can view your AMS Points balance online by logging into ‘your web account' on the AMS website.   The ‘your web account' link is AMS Sign In.   If you do not already have an AMS web account, you can easily create one from the login screen.   After you have logged in to your web account, you will be asked for your MR Reviewer Number or AMS Points ID (whichever is applicable to you) in addition to some basic information.

Note that recent transactions may not be reflected in your AMS Points balance in your AMS web account.   It may take up to three (3) business days to record points transactions in your AMS Points balance.

Your AMS Points balance as of the end of the previous calendar quarter (or previous December, if no intervening activity has taken place) can be found on your most recent AMS Points Statement.

Q: Can I use my points as soon as they are awarded?

A : Yes, points can be used when awarded.   Your AMS Point awards will be confirmed to you quarterly when you will receive an AMS Points Statement which recaps AMS Points activity during the quarter.   MR Reviewers should note that points are awarded on a quarterly basis, not when the review is returned to the MR offices.

Q: Do AMS Points expire?

A :   Yes. AMS Points expire on December 31, two years from the year in which they are issued.  So, for example, points awarded on your April, 2003, AMS Points Statement will expire on December 31, 2005 .

Q: Can I redeem my AMS Points for cash?

A:   No. AMS Points have no cash value.

Q: Can I transfer my AMS Points to my Institution?

A:   Individuals in developing countries are permitted to donate AMS Points to their institutions to use as a discount on purchases of AMS publications.   We ask the contributor to provide notification of donation by contacting Member and Customer Services at:   cust-serv@ams.org .

Institutions using points toward a purchase must order directly from the AMS by contacting Member and Customer Services.   This benefit is applicable only to individuals and institutions in developing countries.   The list of developing countries is available at this link:   Developing Countries List .

Q: Are AMS points considered taxable income in the U.S?

A: Although AMS Points have no cash value and expire, points issued in exchange for services performed in the U.S. are considered to be taxable income by the Internal Revenue Service. The calendar year in which the points are issued in return for services performed is the year such points should be reported as taxable income. The calendar year in which the points are used by the recipient is irrelevant for U.S. tax purposes

Accordingly, whenever an individual is issued points totaling $600 or more in exchange for services performed for the Society in the U.S., the Society will file a Form 1099-MISC showing the total of such points issued with the IRS and the individual, shortly after the calendar year ends in accordance with IRS Regulations and deadlines.
