Employment Center

Overview of the Employment Center

The Mathematical Sciences Employment Center is held each January at the Joint Mathematics Meetings. It serves as a meeting place and information center for ALL employers and job seekers attending the Joint Meetings.

The Employment Center is an in-person interviewing program for positions in the mathematical sciences (mostly requiring a PhD). The Employment Center provides tables for employers for interviewing purposes. Interviews are conducted over a period of three and one-half days. Employers sit for hours at a time conducting interviews at their tables in contrast to the applicants who receive interviews with employers by invitation only. Since applicants greatly outnumber the employers usually, they should expect to be busy only part of the time. Many employers at the Employment Center are looking for well-rounded candidates for college and university teaching positions, although there are usually a few nonacademic employers participating.

The Employment Center is a three and a half day program which takes place during the Meetings. Most participants register in advance by the October deadline and their brief resume or job description is printed in a booklet which is mailed to participants in advance.

Please note: It is especially important for applicants to submit their brief resume by the October deadline , providing as much information about their abilities as possible on it, and indicating in all correspondence with employers in the Fall that they will be available at the Joint Meetings. Some universities interview Employment Center candidates at the Meetings, in locations away from the Employment Center program.

The Mathematical Sciences Employment Center is sponsored by the American Mathematical Society, the Mathematical Association of America, and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics; it is managed by members of the AMS staff with the general guidance of the AMS-MAA-SIAM Committee on Employment Opportunities.
