China Exchange Program

Ky and Yu-Fen Fan Fund Travel Grant from the AMS

INTRODUCTION

The purpose of these grants is to support travel of mathematical scientists at institutions in the U.S. or Canada on visits to research colleagues in China, and to support travel of (generally, less-senior) mathematical scientists from China to the United States or Canada for visits with U.S. or Canadian research colleagues at U.S. or Canadian institutions. While trips may sometimes be combined with conference attendance, funds from this program are not to be used specifically to support conference attendance. Preference will be given, in the case of American or Canadian travelers, to eminent mathematicians whose visit will have a positive impact on the mathematical research community in China. In the case of Chinese travelers, preference will be given to scientists in the beginning stages of their research careers.

It is expected that the host institution will provide some type of additional support for the travel or subsistence of the visitor to ensure a stay of suitable length.

If an application is accepted by the selection panel, an award letter will be issued to the applicant (the department chair). The award letter will explain the final reporting requirements (brief reports after the visit takes place, from both the visitors and the department head) and it will offer departments the option to receive the funds either before or after the travel takes place. Departments are responsible for paying or reimbursing the visitor's expenses; the AMS does not pay visitors directly.

The award funds will be used primarily for these visits; however, a few special stipulations apply. For Chinese institutions hosting U.S. or Canadian visitors, a portion of the total award of up to US$1000 may be used by the institution for the purchase of publications, especially for books and back issues of journals. Also, the department (in China) should make a special award to one outstanding undergraduate student in the names of Ky and Yu-Fen Fan, in the amount of US$250. For U.S. or Canadian institutions applying, US$1000 will be set aside from the total award and given to the home institution (in China) of the visitor (in the case of multiple visitors, the amount should be divided equally), in lieu of honorarium.

The application deadline is March 15 for travel that takes place during the following academic year (between September and August). Applicants will receive a confirmation of their application, which will give an approximate date by which an answer should be expected. The next deadline for applications is March 15, 2009, for the 2009-2010 academic year.

APPLICATION

This application should be completed by the chair or head of the SPONSORING department of mathematical sciences, that is, the department that will host the visitor or visitors.

Please e-mail the answers to the questions below to: chinaexchange@ams.org.

  1. Name of sponsoring department and institution. Provide a complete mailing address and an e-mail address. Also, provide the name of the department head who will be the contact person.
  2. List names of ALL individuals who will be invited/sponsored for a visit.
FOR EACH VISITOR, provide the following information:
      1. Name
      2. Current institution, please indicate position held there, and mailing address
      3. Indicate general area of mathematical research
      4. List faculty at your institution with whom you believe this person will collaborate
      5. Approximate length of stay expected
      6. Approximate dates of expected visit (must be completed by August 31, 2010)
      7. Has the individual agreed to visit?
      8. Include a VITA, electronically if possible, for each proposed visitor
  3. Please specify the amount of funds that you are requesting (most grants range from US$3500-US$5000), together with a detailed explanation of how money from the Fan Fund will be allocated for the visit. What expenses will the Fan Fund money cover for the individual or individuals? Are there funds or accommodations at your institution that will be provided to the visitor, to share the cost of this visit? Explain. (Note: please include only the expenses related to the visit, such as travel and subsistence costs, in your budget items; do not include such items as the US$1,000 that is set aside for the Chinese visitor's home institution).
  4. You may mention here any other information regarding the timeliness or suitability of the proposed visit, including possible visits to other institutions.
  5. Chinese departments only: explain any intended use of funds for the purchase of publications.
