National Commission on Mathematics and Science TeachingSeptember 27, 2000The "Glenn Commission" recently issued its report, "Before It's Too Late: A report to the Nation from The National Commission on Mathematics and Science Teaching for the 21st Century". The report emphasizes that good teaching is key to improved student achievement and recommended programs aimed at improving the existing teaching force and the training of future teachers. Three goals are set, with strategies for attaining them: 1) Establish an ongoing system to improve the quality of mathematics and science teaching in grades K-12; 2) Increase significantly the number of mathematics and science teachers and improve the quality of their preparation; 3) Improve the working environment and make the teaching profession more attractive for K-12 mathematics and science teachers. The Commission was established by the Department of Education in 1999, and chaired by former Senator John Glenn. Secretary of Education Richard Riley said upon receiving the report, "This report demonstrates that now is the time to move forward. We have a sense of urgency to make this our national mission."
