AMS Honors Outstanding Mathematics Teachers
The American Mathematical Society (AMS) sponsored a breakfast to honor the Presidential Awardees for Excellence in Mathematics Teaching as part of recognition week activities held in May 2006 for mathematics and science teacher awardees from across the country. In addition, the AMS hosted one of the many booths at the Information Exchange on May 5th, which provided resources to these outstanding teachers. The Presidential Awards for Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) program is administered for the White House by the National Science Foundation and annually chooses one outstanding teacher in both mathematics and science from each state and territory. It is the nation's highest honor for teaching in these fields. The 2005 winning teachers were selected from among the nation’s finest secondary school mathematics and science teachers and received a US$10,000 award in addition to participating in recognition week events that included meetings with leaders in government and education, a Presidential Citation and awards ceremony, professional development sessions and other celebratory events. The AMS is pleased to be able to recognize such an outstanding achievement by these exceptional mathematics teachers and congratulates all the awardees on their accomplishment.
