AMS Workshop for Department Chairs

Tuesday, January 12, 2010
Moscone Center West, Room 2007, 2nd Floor

The AMS is hosting a one-day workshop for chairs and leaders of departments of mathematical sciences to be held in conjunction with the Joint Mathematics Meetings in San Francisco, California.  The workshop is designed for doctorate and masters degree-granting departments, but other department chairs are welcome to attend.

Workshop Leaders include:

  • Lawrence Gray - Former Head and Director of Undergraduate Studies, School of Mathematics, University of Minnesota
  • John Meakin - Chair, Department of Mathematics, University of Nebraska-Lincoln
  • Stephen Robinson - Chair, Department of Mathematics, Wake Forest University

The workshop format is intended to stimulate discussion among attending chairs and workshop leaders.  Sharing ideas and experiences with peers provides a form of department chair therapy, creating an environment that enables attending chairs to address departmental matters from new perspectives. Past workshop sessions have focused on a range of issues facing departments today, including:

  • Personnel Issues (Staff and Faculty)
  • Long Range Planning
  • Hiring
  • Promotion and Tenure
  • Budget Management
  • Assessments
  • Outreach
  • Stewardship
  • Junior Faculty Development
  • Communication
  • Departmental Leadership

The workshop will be held from 8:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, January 12, 2010.  The registration fee is US$100, which includes lunch and a post-workshop social hour.

This registration fee is in addition to that of the Joint Meetings and is handled directly through the AMS Washington Office.

If you are interested in attending, please complete the Registration Form and return it by December 21, 2009 along with your check for US$100 made payable to the American Mathematical Society.

Agenda, materials and location information will be sent to all registered attendees prior to the meeting.
