Congressman Vernon Ehlers introduces three Bills to improve mathematics and science education.
H.R.4271, which would authorize nearly US$100 million annually for new National Science Foundation programs, was unanimously endorsed by the House Science Committee, July 26, 2000. A key provision of this bill would provide funds for "master" science and mathematics teachers, who would help improve curricula and conduct professional development training for new teachers. The bill has yet to be approved by the full House and--more importantly--receive funding from the Appropriations Committee if it is to be implemented in FY 2001. Prospects for a companion Senate bill are uncertain. Ehlers' other education bills (H.R. 4272 and H.R. 4273) are moving more slowly.
