Bulletin of the American Mathematical Society

The Bulletin publishes expository articles on contemporary mathematical research, written in a way that gives insight to mathematicians who may not be experts in the particular topic. The Bulletin also publishes reviews of selected books in mathematics and short articles in the Mathematical Perspectives section, both by invitation only.

Abstract:

This is a survey of methods developed in the last few years to prove results on growth in non-commutative groups. These techniques have their roots in both additive combinatorics and group theory, as well as other fields. We discuss linear algebraic groups, with $\mathrm {SL}_2(\mathbb {Z}/p\mathbb {Z})$ as the basic example, as well as permutation groups. The emphasis will lie on the ideas behind the methods.
