A geometric reformulation of 4-dimensional surgery

Abstract

Certain topological generalizations of the Schottky groups are described. These act on the three spheres. The question of finding a suitable extension over B4 is considered an shown to be equivalent to the topological surgery-conjecture. The high-dimensional analogues of these actions are shown to have suitable extensions.
