Abstract:

Let $A$ be a Banach $^*$-algebra with an identity. Necessary and sufficient conditions are given for $A$ to be commutative modulo its $^*$-radical and for $A$ to be commutative if $A$ has a faithful $^*$-representation as operators on a Hilbert space.
