"Tying Physical Theory into Stable Knots," by Ivars Peterson. Science News, 3 May 1997, page 270.

This brief article describes recent work linking knot theory, which is a branch of mathematics, to field theory, which is used to describe many physical phenomena. Researchers have for the first time found knot-like structures arising in solutions to certain equations in field theory. This work has connections to string theory and liquid crystals.
