"Medical Mismatch: When hospitals act like men," by Madhusree Mukerjee. Scientific American, June 1997, pages 40-41.
The National Resident Matching Program matches thousands of medical students to hospital residencies each year. The program uses a mathematical algorithm that, based on preference rankings by the students and by the hospitals, attempts to provide the best matching. This short article discusses complaints by students that the program is biased in favor of hospitals.
