"The Theory Formerly Known as Strings," by Michael J. Duff. Scientific American, February 1998, pages 64-69.
This article discusses string theory, one of the most important notions in modern physics, and a candidate for its replacement, M-theory. These theories attempt to unite gravity with quantum mechanics to give a complete description of physical reality. Edward Witten is one of the main proponents of M-theory, out of which can grow not just one but a variety of different string theories.
