This obituary for Jean Leray discusses his profound contributions to mathematical analysis, especially partial differential equations. Leray found much of his inspiration in problems from mechanics and physics and brought to them his deep geometric insight and great technical capability. The obituary identifies some interesting parallels and contrasts between Leray's life and work and that of Andre Weil, another great mathematician who was also born in 1906 and died in 1998.
