"Mathematics Gets Institutionalized---Again," by Barry Cipra. Science, 14 May 1999, page 1111.
This article reports on the decision by the National Science Foundation to continue its funding of the two main mathematics institutes in the United States and to establish a new one. The two existing institutes are the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute in Berkeley, California, and the Institute for Mathematics and its Applications at the University of Minnesota. The new one is the Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics at the University California, Los Angeles. These institutes play an important role in keeping mathematicians abreast of the latest developments in the field.
