"Practical Fractals", by George Musser. Scientific American, July 1999, page 23.
Fractals have become well known to the general public as the subject of many arresting computer-generated images. But they are more than just pretty pictures. This article discusses the use of fractals in antenna design. It turns out that arrays of antennas can be made more efficient when the array has a fractal shape. A fractal shape can also improve the performance of an isolated antenna. The article notes that the mathematical results underpinning these technological developments were presented in the March 1999 issue of the journal Fractals.
