"Quantum Computing," by Lov K. Grover. The Sciences, July/August 1999, pages 24-30.
Lov Grover describes how quantum physics may hold the key to the next computer revolution. Present day computers can only process one operation at a time, but some researchers believe that by manipulating quantum states, they may be able to create a quantum computer capable of carrying out many simulataneous operations. In this article, Grover reports on the progress and the potential obstacles to creating the quantum computer, and describes how he and others have already produced powerful quantum algorithms that would run on such a machine.
