"Fermat's Last Theorem's First Cousin," by Dana Mackenzie. Science, 4 February 2000, pages 792-793.
The "Langlands Program" is a set of conjectures that have had an enormous impact on number theory. Formulated by mathematician Robert Langlands, these conjectures suggest deep and surprising connections between mathematical areas that are very different. One of the reasons Andrew Wiles's proof of Fermat's Last Theorem was so important is that it helped to push forward the Langlands Program. Now the French mathematician Laurent Lafforgue has supplied the proof of another piece of the program. This article describes the Langlands Program and the work of Lafforgue.
