"Duchamp and Poincare Renew an Old Acquaintance," by Barry Cipra. Science, 26 November 1999, pages 1668-9.
A recent conference, entitled "Methods of Understanding in Art and Science: The Case of Duchamp and Poincare," explored mathematical influence on the art world. Organizer and artist Rhonda Shearer recently found evidence that Henri Poincare, father of chaos theory, may have provided inspiration for several works of modernist Marcel Duchamp. Though art historians are skeptical of Shearer's theories, some are reexamining conventional interpretations of Duchamp's pieces in light of her discoveries.
