"Math and Asociality". Random Samples, Science, 25 February 2000.

This brief piece discusses a recent study of Asperger syndrome, a mild version of autism that can make people socially withdrawn and unable to sense the emotions of others. One of the subjects in the study was the mathematician Richard Borcherds, whose work earned him a Fields Medal (the equivalent in mathematics of the Nobel Prize) in 1998.
