"Fuzzy Math", by William Thurston. Letter to the Editor, New York Times, 6 October 2000, page A30.
In the first debate of the 2000 presidential election, George Bush derided some of Al Gore's proposals as "fuzzy math". Thurston writes that, as a mathematician, he was interested in this and chagrined when Bush did not explain exactly what he meant. "I gradually came to understand that by `fuzzy math' Mr. Bush meant, `Math is confusing and fuzzy, so ignore it.'," Thurston writes. "This is dismaying to see in a man who says he will be a leader of educational reform."
