Review of Flatterland: Like Flatland, Only More So, by Ian Stewart. Reviewed by Martin Gardner. International Herald Tribune, 10 July 2001, page 9. (Reprinted from the Washington Post.)
Ian Stewart may be the world's most famous mathematics popularizer writing in English---next to, of course, the legendary Martin Gardner, who here reviews Stewart's latest book Flatterland. In this brief review, Gardner says that Flatterland "is essentially a work about mathematics cleverly disguised as a fantasy sequel to Edwin Abbott's classic Flatland." The device of the novel "allows Stewart to introduce an awesome variety of dazzling topics that include not only pure mathematics but also the latest speculations of physicists and cosmologists," Gardner writes.
