"Not quite the whole story": Review of The Story of Mathematics, by Richard Mankiewicz. Reviewed by Karine Chemia. Nature, 19 July 2001.
Chemia reserves the highest praise of this book for its "191 lavishly illustrated pages, many of which are magnificent reproductions of mathematical documents, instruments or visual evidence of mathematicians' work." The reviewer thinks that the author's goal "to bridge the gap between mathematics and the 'general culture'" accounts for the compromised explanation of mathematics and finds the bibliography to include "an odd selection of titles, without dates or publishers' names". The review is accompanied by three illustrations from the book, but the reviewer questions whether they make mathematical ideas more accessible.
