"Brief Life of a Mathematician," by Krishnaswami Alladi. The Hindu, 31 December 2000.
This article tells the story of the life of Evariste Galois, whose letter to a friend, written just before Galois died in a duel at age 20, gave birth to the modern mathematical field of group theory. The article also discusses the general role of group theory in mathematics, and some of the contributions of two other great mathematicians who worked in this area, John G. Thompson and Srinivasan Ramanujan.
