"Magical numbers in nature," by John Whitfield. Nature Science Update, 12 October 2001.
This is an interview with Ian Stewart in which Stewart talks about his latest book What Shape is a Snowflake? and about the role that mathematics plays in other sciences, especially in biology. Along the way, the topics of chaos, symmetry, and bifurcations are touched on. Stewart predicts that a new kind of science and mathematics will emerge from the linking of mathematical ideas, such as dynamics and fractals, with the information that comes out of genetics, biochemistry, and DNA.
