"NSF Initiative Gives Field a Chance to Show Relevance," by Charles Seife. Science, 14 December, 2001, p. 2275.

The field in question is mathematics, and despite the predominant gloomy news for the U.S. budget, the quadrupling of NSF funding for mathematics (most recently 121 million dollars) may still be on track. Seife writes that Congress and the White House have been persuaded that "increasing funding for mathematics is a cost-effective means of spurring scientific discovery in all fields---and it is also vitally important to national security." One congressional staffer said that mathematics is "a ubiquitous tool to advance all areas." Mathematics is what is called an "enabling discipline."
