"Transcending Equations," by Jim Holt. The New York Times Magazine, 9 December 2001.
This "Year in Ideas" issue includes "Transcending Equations," in which Stephen Wolfram (inventor of Mathematica software) asks, "Why should we rely on mathematical abstractions to understand the world?" Rather, he thinks that we should think of nature as following simple non-mathematical rules that can be simulated on a computer. Wolfram plans to publish his discoveries in a book titled A New Kind of Science.
