"Rare Throwback," by John Allen Paulos, abcnews.com, 1 June 2002.

Mathematician John Allen Paulos, who writes the monthly "Who's Counting" column for abcnews.com, wrote an admiring tribute to the late Stephen Jay Gould. "Stephen Jay Gould, the eminent evolutionary biologist and stylish essayist who died last month, used mathematics to elucidate many ideas, both in and out of science." Paulos reminded us of how Gould brought mathematics into his essays on baseball, bacteria and complexity of life, medians, cancer, I.Q. testing, and many other topics. "He was a rare throwback to a less myopically specialized era."
