"The Geometry Center, 1991-1998. RIP.," by Jeffrey Mervis. Science, 26 July 2002.

The author puts forth some of the possible reasons for the demise of the Geometry Center: "professional jealousy, loss of key personnel, shifting priorities, the lack of community support, or a breakdown in communication with National Science Foundation (NSF) managers?" Despite its enviable annual budget of US$2 million, shifts in the Center's mission may have contributed to its lack of support. Some of those involved--Richard McGehee, Rosemary Chang, Richard Herman, Robert Miner, and Donald Lewis--speculate about the Center's problems and successes and reasons for closing.
