"Esoteric theorist lands starring role in Senate hearing," by Geoff Brumfiel. Nature, 11 September 2003, page 113.
On September 4 Stephen Wolfram testified for one hour before a hearing of the U.S. Senate Subcommittee on Science, Technology and Space regarding his "new kind of science" and how it might benefit physics, biology, and nanotechnology. Wolfram was invited by Sam Brownback (R, KS), chair of the subcommittee and the only member at the hearing. Currently it is not clear which agency would fund the research but Brumfiel writes that Brownback said that Wolfram's work "could have enormous potential," and "If it's right, then the government should be investing in it."
