"Economics prize for duo who resolved random results," by Philip Ball. Nature, 16 October 2003, page 651.
Robert Engle (New York University) and Clive Granger (University of California, San Diego) recently won the Nobel Prize for economics. This article gives some description of their work, including the mathematics involved "to analyze apparently random fluctuations in economic data." Ball points out that the techniques of Engle and Granger have also been used in other fields, such as climatology.
