This article describes an experiment concocted by mathematicians to examine how influence spreads through the scientific community. David Kempe and his colleagues at Cornell University studied a community of over 10,000 particle physicists and devsed an algorithm to identify the most influential physicists in the network. "What the researchers found is that only certain people are able to influence large proportions of the network," the article states.
