"1904 and all that," by J.L. Heilbron and W.F. Bynum. Nature, 18/25 December 2003.
Among the scientific anniversaries this year are Jacob Bernoulli's birth in 1654; Blaise Pascal's never-published book on conic sections, Traite du triangle arithmetique and his correspondence with Pierre Fermat establishing the foundations of probability theory in 1654; and the death of codebreaker and computer theorist Alan Turing in 1954.
