Today quantum computers are only a theoretical possiblity, but they have the potential to surpass traditional computers by performing vast numbers of computations simultaneously. One difficulty researchers have found is that the error-correcting schemes developed for traditional computers would not work on quantum computers. This article describes the work of Peter Shor, who has discovered a new breed of error-correcting scheme that, at least in theory, would work on a quantum computer.
